The incredible persistance of email

Why won't email die?! While we have reasonable communications alternatives from social and collaboration vendors, email numbers continue to go up. This is in contrast to consumer email usage which is projected to drop over the next 4 years. Why are we willing to forgo email for social at home and not at work?
