what about hibernate?

Linux may be free, but up until now it definitely costs me a fair share on my electric bill. What I really want to see are some serious hardening of the suspend/standby/hibernate mode for the whole computer. If I leave for work and don't come home for 8 hours, I would expect that my computer is found sleeping when I get home. It offers the convenience of "leave me where I left off" and "wake on LAN" without having to do a full power cycle. What is the current status of the software suspend in Linux?
