My mother has been looking for an inexpensive laptop. Have to go see if it has a cd burner and i might be able to get her to switch. Should be easy if the modem is working out of the box.

For a mere fifty USD more, you get an AMD 1.1GHz processor instead of a rebadged Cyrix (with all that entails), 10 gig more in hard drive space, and a DVDROM instead of CDROM (no burner included). So, the only point of this exercise is another press release from the Lindows world about their product. Big fardling deal.

USD$498 == AUD$650; plus USD$50 is AUD$716. The cheapest new laptop I can buy here in Oz is $1449: "Acer TravelMate 2303LC, Celeron M 340 (1.5Ghz) 256mb DDR, 15" TFT, 40gb HDD, Combo CD-RW/DVD Drive, 10/100 Lan, 56k Modem, MS Windows XP HOME". If the retailers were allowed (!) to sell it without XP Home, that would be about $1400 (or USD$1070). It's a higher-spec machine, but 50% more expensive.
