The Canton Linux Enthusiasts group I belong to did this with a bunch of Windows 95 boxes that were part of a classroom where we held our meetings. Since we were forbidden to change the hard drive contents of the machines, the members got together and created a terminal server project server, and booted the boxes as thin clients, effectively turning the lame windows 95 boxes into Linux network X terminals.

Worked nice from my limited exposure to them. Just a boot floppy was required.

Great way to leverage old hardware to new potential.
