MIT: Multics and Third world

Looks these guys of MIT are serious about free software.

They already were developing some below-$100 laptop running Linux for the third world. Now they're up to speak out against Microsoft. Good thing, in my opinion.

But, that's what you could expect from the Unix-inventors. They invented Multics, which shipped with source included (GNU didn't exist then, so it was one of the first open-source things I believe). Because the Multics-project was to slow for Bell, they withdraw, and Ken Thompson + Dennis Ritchie wrote Unics (No misspelling!) using the ideas of Multics.

If the MIT people had patented the ideas of Multics however, SCO wouldn't exist tomorrow!
