Always the same story. It ("it" can be replaced by Open Source, counter culture, rave culture, hippy culture etc etc etc) starts "underground", gains some noteriety, is ridiculed by the main stream, gains a whole lot more noteriety and then becomes something that money can be made from. Then the suits move in. Pretty soon we have shrink wrapped "it" everywhere, wrapped up tight in licences and law suits, but the heart/soul/spirit has gone. Cus the suits understand nothing except commodity and profit.

And before anyone rebukes me... There's a difference between earning a living and making a killing. There's a difference between joining in and taking over.

The (somewhat idealistic) view from here.

I actually enjoyed this article -- except for the opening paragraph:

The Open Source Business Conference held this month in San Francisco was chock-full of information on how to make money using open source software. Once a bastion for socialist thinking, the open source (OS) community is finally coming of age.

It's been coming of age now for about 5 years, IMHO.

People always focus on the cash aspects of the situation -- not the Free as in freedom aspects. I think they can't help it.

Oh well :-) If she spends some time watching what's going on she'll eventually see it too.
