kernel configuration a very nice differentiating factor

It seems that the more polished Linux distributions become, the more they distance themselves from the kernel. It is refreshing to see Libranet embrace the Linux kernel by providing tools to switch kernels, reconfigure kernels, build kernels and even download and manage kernel sources. While end users will probably (definitely?) never get to the point of compiling a kernel, developers cannot live without them. I know that in each Linux distribution I have installed and manage (yes, even Linspire) I have mucked in the kernel. We certainly cannot treat it so transparently as to forget how to work with it. Besides, it was the reason we showed up on the doorstep of the Penguin in the first place.
