Distrowatch is reporting that Big Linux has a new release out. http://biglinux.codigolivre.org.br/modules.php?name=News&fil... (scroll down for screenshots) It features some interesting 3d desktop manipulation. But, the distro is in Portugese. Which I don't speak. Does anyone know what the 3d app is so I can get it onto my own machine?

From Librenix:

"BIG Linux 2.0 has been released. This has to be one of the most interesting and fun distribution releases for a long time - mainly due to its 3D capabilities (Super Karamba). "

Of course, that was the announcement for 2.1 but not only have I never seen Super Karamba do anything like what I'm seeing in the screenshots, I don't know how that would work in Gnome. I'm almost positive gdesklets can't do that.

I'm interested in this as well but other than that announcement repeated on multiple sites, I've found nothing. It's a place to start, though.

Unless they've taken it from Looking-glass (?) And there's also various Windows based apps that do this kind of thing. I really do think (having never actually used anything like this yet) that this is the early stages of the future of desktop/window manipulation. It just makes sense to see the screen as having depth and not just being a 2d plane.

Could they have actually done something using 3d-desktop? I hadn't heard much about that recently.

I'd certainly hope if that was the case that they'd give credit but perhaps they have. Systran translates their section about what they've done with 3D as:

"Innovating as the first distribution to possess Desktop 3D as option, making possible to the user to enjoy today of resources that will be common in the future, you has the freedom to move the windows in all the possible positions, including depth and rotation, beyond transparency and some other resources as to minimize in icon."

Would a proper translation turn "Desktop 3D" into "3D-Desktop"?

It could be Metisse. http://insitu.lri.fr/~chapuis/metisse/running.html

That DOES look more like it than 3d-desktop.

sal,

I think you've nailed it.

From a thread about Big Linux's 3D capabilities at http://barrapunto.com/article.pl?sid=05/04/14/1632235&mode=t...

"You say that metisse does the same, and do not know the guessed right thing that you are, since I read in the forums of the distribution that the graphical system is based on metisse [ insitu.lri.fr ]."
