We are going about this spam problem all wrong. No matter how much hardware or software you throw at the problem, more spam will leak through. I have received messages that are virtually impossible to detect as spam, such as:

Subject: hey dan Body: hello, what are you doing this weekend?

It isn't going to stop until we cut it off at the knees. We have to implement a more secure method of mail acceptance, such as not accepting any mail without a GPG signature or otherwise digitally signed. You could even go so far as to not accept mail unless you have the key. Big companies like amazon, google, ebay, paypal etc could publish the public keys for anyone to import tomorrow. Then you just have to collect one from all your friends, and problem is solved.

This idea seems much easier to impose at a corporate level since you could just issue keys to all employees and negotiate with partners.

Anti-spam appliances are just plain IGNORANT!

Spam won't stop until some form of vigilantism stops it.

Either national legislatures create laws that allow some kind of civil penalty on spammers (which motivates cranky individuals to go after spammers), or some kind of crime syndicate will organize it.

The big corporations will not put anything in place to stop spam - they're the ones who profit from it, directly by advertising, or indirectly, through providing bandwidth, hardware, etc. Remember that corporate browsers (IE and Netscape up to 4.x) went out of their way to CONCEAL THE FACT THAT COOKIES EXIST, and that some web sites set them all the time.

Spam won't stop until we have effective tools like SpammerAssassin. Kill off spammers, no more spam. Simple, clean, and effective.
