Matrox did indeed (really) try to go after the fledgling 3D market. However, the competition was able to easily out do them in time. It was only then that Matrox decided to keep with the high quality 2D brand recognition that made them popular originally (well.. back then 2D performance was very important in gaming and Matrox certainly targeted that space).

Matrox stopped being a 3D company when they realized that they stink at it. Shoot, they really didn't stop until after Parhelia when you get right down to it.

Article says Matrox has ALWAYS been just about 2D. That's simply not true.
