...bouncing the rubble even higher? It's not as if there's even going to be very much rubble to bounce.

There's also motivation from the other direction: being seen as a patent "heavy" could work against IBM's public image -- particularly amongst that loose non-federation known as "the Open Source community" or even more so that non-state within the stateless known as "the Free Software community".

I doubt that IBM cares about being seen as a patent "heavy".

Everybody knows they have a huge patent portfolio -- including lots and lots of hardware patents. If you've got legitimate patents, defending them doesn't make you a heavy.

More likely than not, they've done the cost-benefit analysis and decided not to bother.

Also, if they won the case, what would they get out of it - bragging rights? SCO has no mo.
