This is an ancient version (since September 17th, 2003 as far as I can tell) which actually shows that Yahoo doesn't care about Linux very much.

If it supported things like voice and webcam then it would have been great, but it doesn't support these things and you can get a far more convenient interface to Yahoo Massenger using Gaim and Kopete (to name a few).

This is a tough one. Because sure Google is not giving out tools and gizmos to Linux .. but they have been sponsoring massive coding evolution: http://code.google.com/summerofcode.html

And because of such, I personally let them off the hook. But not Yahoo ... what have they done for Linux? Their chat console doesn't feature 1/5 of the things the Windows counterpart can do.

Sometimes its better not to have a port at all - then to have a mediocre or substandard substitute; which is also the case with Skype - that performs so badly in Linux (ie echoes, sound crashes, no skins, etc).

With Skype I had to make random business calls and was asked to use that to save money, but while it worked alright on Windows .. it performed so poorly in Linux - I had to end up using the phone instead. That bad. And me: not happy.

GoogleTalk can be used with Gaim on Linux, and the main developer for Gaim has recently been employed by Google to work on making GoogleTalk as open as possible and useable by as many clients as possible. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ Look under "Working at Google"

Google's servers are just jabber servers that use your gmail contact list as it's buddies source.
