One of the hardest aspects in promoting GNU/Linux has been trying to explain to prospective new users accustomed to Windows what they are missing by staying with Windows. This is one of the first and so far the best articles I have read that does just that.

Moving from Windows to GNU/Linux is a more like changing your culture than buying a new car. You only get more out of the system by changing the way you think and approach problem solving. Consequently, the advantages of GNU/Linux over Windows are very hard to explain in terms that Windows-only users can understand.
