But the goal of portland isn't to unify the desktop. No-one except Windows users and a bunch of ISV would want to do that. The goal is to make a common set op API's that are supported on all desktops. A much more modest goal than "unifying the desktop".

Well that would certainly make a lot more sense. A high level of interoperability is all I ask for. :-) I'm glad my comments spark this kind of feedback.
