I have always found it difficult to strip a kernel down to bare essentials i.e. remove all the unneeded modules and superfluous kernel infrastructure. The main issue has always been finding out exactly what hardware is on the machine and then matching it with the options set by the .config file.

This book is by far the clearest exposition on how to do this. It has two very useful scripts and plenty of detail.

I built a minimal kernel in under an hour with this book and it booted first time. Highly recommended!
