http://www.norhtec.com/products/mcjr/ I find it intriguing, and I really wanted to get one at one point ...

but http://www.norhtec.com/products/mcjr/mcjr-ship.html shipping to the U.S. is $44. And I think RAM is hard-soldered and only 128 MB.

That's when I turned to repurposed thin clients. Not as cool as the Norhtec, but faster and way cheaper. For all my Linux distro tests, I use a Maxterm Maxspeed 1 GHz Via C7-based thin client. It has a built-in CF-to IDE interface and boots from CF (or, in my case from CD and hard drives I have hooked up to the IDE header instead).

I had to add my own 256 MB ram stick (that's the max for this motherboard), and I got an extra-long IDE cable and a couple of power-splitting plugs so I could use two drives (and give them a longer "leash" from the thin-client box) but after that I was off and running. For less than the Norhtec. Eventually I'm going to disconnect the external drives and just run off of CF (and yes, Puppy and DSL both work great -- anybody who tries one should definitely try the other).

Forgot to mention that the Maxterm was only cheap because I got it used on eBay. Unix Surplus is the company I bought from, and they have a few 800 MHz models left.

They're fun to play around with -- that's for sure.
