I've never noticed this happening. In fact, I haven't had a hard drive noticeably spin down since my Powerbook 1400.

And the fix, as stated in the article:

hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda

Does that go in a config file? And if so, which one?

And shouldn't there be a GUI in which to set this, especially in Ubuntu-world?

(For me, the fact that Gutsy allows me to easily toggle the tap-to-left-click action on my Gateway laptop's Alps touchpad is borderline revolutionary, but I digress.)

Set it in /etc/hdparm.conf if you want to make it permanent.
