I'm not familiar with the case either, but Google News suggest this: http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2009/01/be...

LOL. First they redirect inet requests and leave security holes open in routers...now they pay for reviews....another reason to continue ignoring Belkin.

If you're looking for more reasons, I have one. The company I work for has decided on a Juniper Networking VPN solution, which apparently uses a browser based SSL connection. Once you're connected, you have the option of logging into the AD tree and mapping your network drives. Every other router I've tried handles this fine. Belkin does not. Using a Belkin router the login script simply hangs and your drives never get mapped. Changing to a Linksys or Dlink router solves the problem completely. Upgrading the Belkin to the latest firmware made no difference. It also makes no difference whether you're using the wireless connection or a wired one.

Now, some would consider not working with AD and vbs scripts a plus (hello, TC), but since many companies use such technologies it's probably not a good idea from a commercial perspective.

This is now confirmed:

Belkin boss 'extremely sorry' for cash-for-good-reviews plan

"According to an open letter from Belkin big cheese Mark Reynoso, the "unethical practice" was conducted by "one of our employees", who offered cash in exchange for good reviews."

The CEO tried to deny it earlier. IOW, he lied to the public.

Paul, paul, paul --

You naive and alarmist little chunk of chipmunk, sitting up in your Ivory Tower, isolated from the ways of the world and oblivious to the realities behind your words.

Nobody would ever astro-turf in real life because of the Tirebiter Implied Tontine:

I agree never to reveal who I am, so you must never believe me.

Nobody should ever believe anything anybody says on the internet, hence it can't possibly be unethical to pay for positive reviews, to put up postings that pretend to be from a reader when in fact they are from a member of the staff, or any of that kind of thing.

Just being anonymous is tantamount to a lie, so, by being truthful, you are really lying.

The only way to be ethical is to lie, although stealing is probably ok, too.

Surely you see that.

Quoting:Another stipulation was down rating any negative reviews of the product on Amazon as not helpful.

Now you're getting dangerously close to slander. That's something that can be prosecuted. In this case it's slandering an honest reviewer. I'd be interested to see if they promoted bad reviews of rival products.

Dinotrac (If that is your real name),

I feel a familiarity to this transaction for some strange reason. The story has a much happier ending though :-)

Forgoing the moment and opportunity to take something funny and make it worse, I must mention that Joe Barr is sadly not able to witness any of this (or our jabs at each other).

Kind of gives pause and makes me hold off on the submit button.

I know he's got a heck of a broadband connection up there, so he's probably still smiling.

Joe, we miss you man.

Paul -- if you can read this with eyes ready to drop from their sockets after so many hours hunched like Quasimodo in your basement bell-tower drooling over green phosphor letters on the burned-in monochrome screen you cling to in order to preserve your sense of history and run-on sentences --

I am sure Joe's all atwitter up there, but quite certain he isn't settling for broadband. Up there, they got allband, man -- not to mention a lot of really great bands.

If the administration wasn't using FOSS when he arrived, I feel quite certain that it is under serious consideration now.

That we do. :(

I never met Joe in person, but I read many of his articles over the years.

Joe in person seemed to fit his articles pretty well, at least if you have some experience with irascibleTexans. A little time on 6th st in Austin might not hurt.

One of the highlights of what I laughingly call my writing life came when Joe asked if I could enlist my character "Toadie" in a piece about software procurement in Austin.

Wasn't my best work (which is saying something), but Joe was appreciative.

You told me I shouldn't believe anything I read on the internet.

Since I respect your opinion, and believe what you say, I'll take your advice and not believe what you say.

A very wise approach. Now -- If you don't send me any money, everything will be fine.
