Telling People They're Wasting Their Time

It's funny, telling people they're wasting their time never seems to go over very well. Even when it was Gnome vs. KDE telling each other they were their projects were a distraction or siphoning off resources, all it does is make those who've dedicated themselves to a project pissed and work on it harder.

This is a far better example than I could ever put together for why I don't express gratitude to big companies that contribute to FOSS. They contribute if and only if it's for their own benefit. Why should I celebrate that?

If their interest aligns with yours, then it's a good thing. Unfortunately, that seldom seems to be the case any more.
