If Dell sells 30% of netbooks with Ubuntu, then on the surface it looks like Linux/Mac momentum is too strong now for MS to deal with even if Win 7 is accepted well. I guess we wait and see now.

In a little more than a year MS's revenue from Windows (in statements, they called it "client" before) gradually decreased by 40% and total revenue by 18%. At the same time Apple's sales of computers increased by 22.5% and total revenue by 32.3%.

MSFT (Windows revenue, mil)

(Sep, 2009) Q1, 2010 = $2,620 ($12.92 bil total sales) (Jun, 2009) Q4, 2009 = $3,108 (Mar, 2009) Q3, 2009 = $3,404 (Dec, 2008) Q2, 2009 = $3,982 (Sep, 2008) Q1, 2009 = $4,218 (Jun, 2008) Q4, 2008 = $4,367 ($15.84 bil total sales)

APPLE (Mac computers sold, mil)

(Sep, 2009) Q4, 2009 = 3.05 M ($9.87 billion total sales) (Jun, 2009) Q3, 2009 = 2.6 M (Mar, 2009) Q2, 2009 = 2.22 M (Dec, 2008) Q1, 2009 = 2.52 M (Sep, 2008) Q4, 2008 = 2.61 M (Jun, 2008) Q3, 2008 = 2.49 M ($7.46 billion total sales)

Dell: "Product Revenue — Product revenue and unit shipments decreased year-over-year by 25% and 14%, respectively, for the second quarter of Fiscal 2010. For the first half of Fiscal 2010, product revenue decreased year-over-year by 26% on unit shipment decline of 15%. Our product revenue performance is primarily attributed to a decrease in customer demand as a result of the challenging economic environment and a reduction in average selling price."

Dell: "Consumer’s mobility revenue declined 1% year-over-year on unit growth of 30% for the second quarter of Fiscal 2010, and for the first half of Fiscal 2010, Consumer’s mobility revenue decreased 3% on unit growth of 31%. During the second quarter and first half of Fiscal 2010, Consumer’s average selling price for mobility products decreased 24% and 26% year-over-year, respectively. Consumer’s revenue, unit, and average selling price performance is attributable to Consumer’s continued expansion into retail coupled with an industry mix shift to lower priced mobility product offerings."

You know, your numbers are very encouraging. However, every time I see real progress I get to report something like this:

That article should appear on LXer shortly.

I would love to see some way of forcing these OEM deals out in the open. You're right Caitlyn. It's an amazing coincidence.

@Sander: I can't say it's more than a coincidence, but given Microsoft's history I can ask questions and be suspicious.
