Ubuntu Lucid on Gateway Solo 1450

Story: Turning off kernel mode setting is the key to Intel 830m video in Ubuntu Lucid, Sidux 2009-04 - and probably Debian Squeeze, tooTotal Replies: 0

I tried the Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 DVD on the Gateway Solo 1450 that my daughter uses (1.2 GHz Celeron, 512 MB RAM, Intel video).

Without turning off kernel mode setting, it panics during the boot.

With the VESA driver, no video.

With kernel mode setting turned off, X is great, the kernel even manages the Gateway's hard-to-manage CPU fan - something that hasn't been automatic since the 2.6.18 kernel (the Debian Etch and PC Linux OS 2007 era).

The console graphics seem a bit dodgy (they always are in my experience with Ubuntu). I'll have to look at that again (and try Sidux on the Gateway as well).

But good X after turning off kernel mode setting - that's a nice thing to discover on this Gateway, which is still running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
