Does this make the future look bleak?

The fact that Kernel.org is not yet online does not augur well for the open source community.

It looks like it's going to hurt open source badly, though I'm not terribly sure about its resilience.

What do you think?

Hard to see how that's the case.

It's easy to get a site back up in a hurry, and the kernel.org folks most certainly could have done that, but...

they decided to review the problem and adapt a comprehensive solution that would not impose too heavily on the process of along a veritable army of developers to contribute to the kernel development process.

If anything, it shows the strength and resilience of free software, not to mention the benefits of not having one's hand forced by sales promises and artificial deadlines.
