The only comment I had (which I left in the article) is signing packages that go in the repos.

My understanding is that this was more about "mirroring" a repository to minimise downloads on each machine on a local network, and control versioning of available apps, etc.. Restricting access to the repository to local network machines ought to render your concerns moot. And, I know that there are other tools for that, it's just that they are just as much of a pain (if not more) to set up, and this seems to simplify the client side of things.
