Who wants to bet that "open" has the same meaning as their "open" document standard. It seems like a big commitment to an OS that only has 1% of the market.

But, OTOH, MS knows better than anyone else that their current code is unwieldy (how many layers of duct tape are on it now?), inherently insecure, and ultimately doomed to fail. Likely they would have jumped to Linux (or BSD) a few years ago, if only they could have purchased exclusive rights to it. Perhaps the new subsidiary is another attempt at acquiring this goal?
