Despite the sensationalist headline, this appears to be nothing more than a Ubuntu shutdown bug requiring a bizarre sequence of events to become manifest. See Theodore Ts'o's response on Google+ here:

I repeat, this is not an ext4 file corruption bug according to Mr. Ts'o.

Yes, almost. Keeping this within LXer, I think Steven_Rosenberg does a good job on his tech reporting and blogging.
