Since Canonical has been pushing cell-phone and tablet interfaces it looked like they had forgotten desktop interfaces. I sort of care about PCs, but I am a scientist/engineer and really care about workstations. They require too much screen real estate to ever go off the desktop. Canonical making MATE available in their next LTS release is very encouraging. At least some folks at Canonical seem to understand it is stupid to burn too many bridges to people who have links to technical computing. That includes their own developers.
