Did anyone notice the author's goof in the fourth paragraph:

“Shuttleworth already had commissioned his own init alternative in Ubuntu, Mir display server, and he had no enthusiasm for systemd, but Debian's move forced his hand.”

On the other hand, albinard, I wouldn't be surprised if systemd had already taken over the display server space. One ring to rule them all. :)

Not directly, but you pretty much require Logind to get things up and running if you are to use Wayland.

This in that Logind will act as the go-between to grant the WM/compositor the "root" rights needed to talk to the graphics hardware, as best i can tell.

So pretty much the same "issue" as with having Xorg running as root (sooner or later something has to if you want things to work).
