Ms Hall's rebuttal to that CIO article beat me to it. You don't have to upgrade a supported distro. As long as your distribution supports security updates there is no need to upgrade. That said I usually upgrade to a new release of Mint. Just make sure you do a belt, suspender, and thumbtack backup of your personal files before you do it. It is best to keep your home directories on a separate partition. That way you can keep those as a different issue from your upgrade.

I brought this to Linux Mint's attention (comment #196).

Their response was:

Quoting:Edit by Clem: Journalists should ask questions before posting opinions. I can’t think of a single security fix in the 18.1 upgrade, it’s all about new features. The security updates are exactly the same on 18 and 18.1 and you get them whether you upgrade or not. They’re completely independent and have nothing to do with this upgrade.
