Will these updates be immediately available to Firefox? Or at least easily transferable?

I have to agree with what one of the editors of LWN wrote, Galeon, Firefox, Epiphany and Mozilla are to similare.. I'd hate to see a lot of duplicate work being done here.. what I'm wondering is how much of the mozilla development (since that seems to be the most innovative project) goes into a common core (gecko?) so all gecko-based browsers can immediately take advantage of it.

The updates won't be immediately available to Firefox. When the next firefox is released, however, you could be sure that they will include the latest Mozilla build.

BTW - the README file linked to above shows how much of the development went into the Gecko engine. The short answer: Most of the work seems to me (from my brief reading) to be focused on Gecko.

Ok, that's good to know. And with immediately I simply meant that they don't need to transfer it into their codebase, just automatically (or with little work) get it when they upgrade to a new version of gecko..

Ahh, well then I don't know the answer to that. :) You would hope it'd be a simple matter of recompiling, but who knows?

I used to be an avid user of the Galeon web browser. I would upgrade the very second the rpms came out. Since the relationship between Galeon and Mozilla is similar to the relationship between FireFox and Mozilla, perhaps I can provide an answer to the question.

FireFox uses the gecko rendering engine, but has rewritten the user interface similar to how Galeon uses gtk-mozembed. In a sense, the mozilla components are becoming "widgets" which can be embedded into other user interfaces. When mozilla upgrades, it usually means everything, the rendering engine, the components and their own UI based on XUL. This means that all projects which use the gecko engine and components have to go grab the new sources and merge them in, similar to if you were to upgrade GTK2 or QT3.

Perhaps that explanation sucks, but it should get you thinking at least.

Ditto the props, this site rocks. I would like to see better html/styles though, however I realize that is not the main focus. My favorite site for reference is whitespace.com. They have made some profound progress in the world of styles, as well as alistapart.com and http://www.csszengarden.com/.

Dan,

The layout is intended to try to be light and simple, but if you prefer heavier and prettier pages, you can customize your account! Just click to your membe page and click on "Layout Preferences" and have fun!

Dan,

I like the minimalist approach to LXer... Edit the look and post changes back for us to try out. :)

dave and greensky,

I am definitely looking forward to playing around with my own customization. I was actually aware of that feature from the Linux Show discussion. However, my point is actually a bit different...let me expand...

By no means do I think the site should become more cluttered, oh no, the site is great as a minimalistic site. Minimalistic is good and no one seems to appreciate the concept anymore (esp those that that have "PR" at the end of their name).

Rather, I am referring more to the standards used for the default style. CSS layouts are extremely powerful in the sense that they can offer the most minimal layouts possible, squeezing the html into literally half the size of table-based layouts. Granted, this doesn't mean tables shouldn't be used, but use sparingly only when the data calls for tabular format.

There are two initiatives out there for a CSS layout slashdot and a CSS layout google (I can't find the google one). The advantage to both is that the XHTML is reduced significantly in size. I have included some links in order of importance on the matter. The nice part about CSS layouts is that you can disable style sheets and get the most minimal looking layout you could possibly imagine. Look for a firefox plugin called "disable stylesheets" to see what a CSS layout can do for you.

The "journey" as Zeldman calls it: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slashdot/ http://www.alistapart.com/articles/journey/

p.s. I LOVE the spell check plugin!!!!

The trouble with relying completely on CSS for your formatting is that you shut out Netscape 4 (and other older browsers) from browsing. Maybe it's a testament to my inexperience, but I've never seen a good CSS site that also looks good in Netscape 4.

And, unfortunately, there are a lot of folks still using NS4. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

Does anyone have a cool html+css layout they want to share to the world? The only thing I did was to narrow the 'story-tables' to something less than 100%.. I'd love to see if anyone have done some cool stuff!

Dave, you talked on the linux show about a repository of layouts where you click an image to get to the html+css files, is that happening?

I like the original layout actually.. but it's fun to see what other people are up to :) Anyways, thanks for the great site.. I haven't visited LT for a week ;-)
