I think we need to be careful with this situation. The last thing we need is unnecessary controversy.

The choice to open source software application is exactly that, a choice. I open source my software because I want to, not because someone tells me I have to. We may all want Sun to open source Java and it may make sense to do so, but Scott is right in saying that IBM should not instruct him on what to do with his company's assets.

If you choose not to use Java because of the decision, that would be the correct reaction if you felt strongly about it. Don't flame Sun and make enemies, they could still come around, but it won't happen if they see the community as controlling.
