The professor is right. Although most of us are not particularly fond of MS, there is no good reason to put down DotNet. From what I've heard of it, DotNet is a very productive environment. We should be glad its around for GNU/Linux.

Mono doesn't seem to be the legal snakepit we initially thought it would be, otherwise it would have been dropped like a hot potato by Novell. At least we're not worse off with Mono than we are with the always about to be open sourced, but never quite free Java.

Mono is 100% Open Source. It seems Novell is comfortable enough with Mono to back it, so the show doesn't seem to be stopped much by patents. Anyways, if a patent turns up, the community will rip the feature out and replace it with something unencumbered. The community can code circles round MS, please stop worrying.
