Using NX to Run GUI Applications From a Linux Server

While Linux servers don’t typically run graphical user interfaces (GUIs) they are just as capable of doing so as any other computers, and there are certain situations in which serving up GUI applications over the network may be necessary or desirable. One solution which offers a lot of flexibility and speed is NX from NoMachine. Here's how to set it up.

  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Ubuntu
In my testing (of Ubuntu 13.10) I haven’t had any issues compared to performance issues with 12.10, but in my long time experience using and testing Ubuntu regularly I can offer a few tips for ensuring the smoothest possible user experience.

  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Android
There’s a whole slew of low end to mid range Android smartphones out there which don’t come with very generous amount of phone storage memory, causing their users to constantly run into the issue of running out of space when installing and using various Android apps. Since not everyone can afford to buy top end smartphone models, especially in the developing world, this should speak to a sizeable number of Android users. There are a few simple ways to go about making the most out of this small chunk of phone memory though, so here’s what you can do.

The Tech-FAQ Introductory Guide to Bitcoin

Introduction to the open source peer to peer cryptocurrency, why get involved, how to buy it, how to sell, and where to spend.

Free Antivirus Apps for Linux

"All in all, antivirus software for Linux aren’t totally useless, so for those who like to be on the safest side of things, or are just a tiny bit paranoid about security, or wish to make sure your servers are malware free, here’s an overview of those you can get completely free. I’ve tested them all myself, and discarded those which failed to install or otherwise don’t appear to be working."

Rundown of 10 Mobile Platforms for Smartphones and Tablets (with videos)

"Since the iPhone kickstarted a revolution in what users expect from a modern smartphone, and then a modern tablet, the number of operating systems for these types of devices has increased. This is an overview of all notable options, from incumbents like Android and iOS, to overhauls such as Blackberry OS 10, to newcomers like Ubuntu Phone and Sailfish OS."

The Ubuntu Heartbreak: Amazing Potential Stunted by Major Showstoppers

"This is an honest reminder of showstoppers that persistently prevent Ubuntu from becoming what I really do want it to become, and what I think it has a chance of achieving: a complete replacement of Windows or OSX."

Understanding The Importance of Privacy in The Networked World

"Privacy has been a big topic as of late, which is unsurprising considering that we are living in an age of information; the time when access and sharing of information is easier than ever. This fact has enabled a kind of leakage of privacy; more and more of what used to be considered private is being shared with the world, or is much easier to obtain, even without your knowledge or against your will, than ever before."

The Rebirth of Linux

"In some ways Linux is dead, if you judge a liveliness of a platform by how much relevance it has to the mainstream consumer. That doesn’t, however, mean that a revival isn’t possible. And amidst all these death proclamations a few key trends are emerging that could actually signal a rebirth."

Escaping The Walled Gardens In The Clouds

It’s a world of silos, and if you expect the smoothest experience possible it seems you’re no longer choosing between specific operating systems or specific devices. You are choosing between entire companies. What if we had an open alternative to things like the iCloud? The same user experience, but without the ecosystem limitations; you create your own ecosystem.

Android is Not a Single OS

"If a particular manufacturer’s version of Android is this different from stock Android then it’s effectively a fork, a different operating system. In that case it seems like we would be better served to call it as such. Instead of talking about everyone running Android, implying it is the same thing on all these devices, it might be better to talk about Samsung Android running on Samsung devices, HTC Android running on HTC devices, and so on."

Pentagon Goes Mobile Without Apple

Research in Motion has long-held a stranglehold on all things mobile with the U.S. DoD. Time goes on, and things change. After being turned down by Apple to have access to the iOS codebase, both the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), have announced the release of separately developed hardened versions of the Android operating system (OS) in the past year.

100 Best Linux Games

This is a selection of a whole of 100 best games available for Linux, some free and some paid, along with their genre and where you can acquire them.

Should Apple Open up, and What Does Liberty Have to Do With It

Electronic Frontier Foundation just posted an article discussing “Apple’s Crystal Prison and The Future of Open Platforms” in which they characterize Apple’s and Microsoft’s restrictive policies as affronts on users freedom, and call on Apple to lead the way by aligning with Steve Wozniak’s call for Apple to open up. I generally support the idea of more openness in computing, but I see a couple of key issues with what they wrote.

Why Free Linux Games Wont Cut It

There are plenty of free games for Linux, and some Linux advocates are quick to point to some of the better examples. Unfortunately, this selection of games just doesn’t cut it compared to what is commercially available, for a few reasons.

"Ubuntu 12.04 is at the very least among the best Ubuntu releases so far, and definitely represents an improvement over 11.10."

In Defense of Technology Lock-In

I’m going to do the unthinkable. I am going to actually defend the practice that many consider “anti-competitive”, the practice of so called “vendor lock-in” often employed by technology companies such as Apple and Microsoft.

Richard Stallman vs. Steve Jobs: No Jails Found

Contrasting Stallman's philosophy to Steve Jobs work. "The biggest problem here isn’t so much how insensitive RMS may have been, but the underlying philosophy that he promotes. What he said makes perfect sense if you buy into his philosophy."

Ubuntu 11.10 Review: Incremental Refinement

  • Tech-FAQ; By Daniel (Posted by Libervis on Oct 14, 2011 2:04 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Ubuntu
Unlike the last release, which featured a switch to an entirely new Unity user interface, this one is a fairly incremental upgrade. What most of us expected were further refinements to this new user interface, and Ubuntu more or less delivered on that, but let’s get into the nitty gritty.

Zorin OS: Promising, but Still Typically Linux

  • Tech-FAQ.com; By Daniel (Posted by Libervis on Oct 10, 2011 2:18 PM EDT)

Depending on your expectations, purposes, and somewhat on your luck, there’s a good chance you might be satisfied with Zorin OS. Perhaps most notably I think it is an excellent alternative for those who dislike the new Ubuntu Unity interface.
