Welcome to this year's final issue of DistroWatch Weekly! With the year 2006 closing down on us rapidly, this seems like a good time to take a look at the world of Linux distributions and their evolution during the past year. Who has done the best job of bringing Linux to the desktops of new users? And which distributions are the losers of the increased competition among the different projects, all vying for our attention? As always, opinions are likely to vary, but some trends aren't difficult to spot. In the news section: Fedora looks to regain control over the RPM Package Manager, KNOPPIX promises a new version of its live CD, Debian publishes a release update, and Arch Linux announces an easy-to-install CD for desktop users. Finally, warm wishes of a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all DistroWatch readers! See you again in 2007!

Welcome to this year's 49th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! As hinted earlier, the new openSUSE 10.2 was released on time. One of the most popular Linux distributions on the market, the latest release appears solid and reasonably bug-free, at least compared to version 10.1. We'll take a brief look at the new release, comment on the project's association with Novell, and provide a few handy resources for extending the product. Also in this week's issue: Debian delays Etch, Ulteo releases Sirius, Mandriva prepares a cooker snapshot, and PC-BSD reaches the final round of testing before its updated stable release. Finally, don't miss the new commercial distribution by Technalign: Pioneer Linux. Happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 49th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! It's openSUSE week, as one of the oldest and most popular Linux distributions on the market makes a brand new release on Thursday. Will the project's association with Novell (and, indirectly, Microsoft) hurt the download figures? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, the much awaited public release from Gaël Duval's Ulteo is about to hit the download mirrors - expect the live CD image later this week. Also in the news: interest in running Linux on Sony PlayStation 3 intensifies, KANOTIX is rocked by resignation of a co-developer, and Ubuntu developers react on the project's decision to include proprietary graphics driver in Feisty. Finally, we are pleased to announce that the recipient of DistroWatch's November 2006 donation is the digiKam project. Happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 48th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! With the end of the year 2006 approaching fast, many developers are hard at work preparing their latest product releases. A new version of Xandros Desktop, the subject of our first look review, will be announced later this week, while SabayonLinux 3.2 and the PlayStation edition of Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 are also expected shortly. Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 is about to enter its hard-freeze period, while the recent release candidate for openSUSE 10.2 is reportedly shaping up into a highly polished distribution. Many other projects have been making steady progress towards their future releases - Freespire has launched its development process which will lead to a stable version 2.0 in the first quarter of 2007 and many far-reaching changes are also planned for the next release of Fedora Core. All these topics, together with the usual round-up of interesting news from around the distro world - that's issue 179 of DistroWatch Weekly. Happy reading!

DistroWatch Weekly: Etch delay, third-party software repositories, FreeBSD's security event auditing

Welcome to this year's 47th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! It was a relatively quiet week, only disturbed by the news about Java being released under the GPL and the unusual levels of interest in the new Linux Mint 2.0. This week's discussion revolves around adding third-party repositories to Ubuntu and other distributions; while the goal of extending the number of easily installable software packages sounds good, mindless addition of repositories can not only compromise system security, it can also break one's system beyond repair. Also in the news: Debian "etch" delays, Fedora 6 usage statistics, FreeBSD's new Security Event Auditing (SEA) system, and an opinion about including proprietary kernel modules in Linux distributions. Finally, the DistroWatch database saw an addition of four new Linux distributions last week; these include the low-end Fluxbuntu Linux and the user-friendly Ulteo. Happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 46th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! As Novell continues to endure the wrath of the open source developer and user community, many people are wondering whether they should boycott Novell's products. In the meantime, openSUSE continues its 10.2 development process unabated and on target for the early December release. Also in the news: a war of words erupts between Fedora and Ubuntu, Feisty Fawn's new features attract fresh controversy, Debian prepares a new set of kernels for "etch", and Slackware introduces modern features into its "current" tree. We'll bring you the results of our Mandriva Linux 2007 PowerPack competition and continue our discussion on DistroWatch's Page Hit Ranking statistics. Happy reading!

DistroWatch Weekly: Novell partners with Microsoft, CentOS on Oracle, gNewSense, Mandriva 2007

Welcome to this year's 45th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! Novell drops a bombshell on the Linux community. Signing an exclusive patent-protection agreement with Microsoft, a company that has been trying to discredit Linux at every opportunity, Novell claims that the deal is great for its customers. The community, however, is not impressed. In the meantime, CentOS, a project that provides a free clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, voices its concerns over the recently launched Oracle Enterprise Linux. In other news: find out how the Fedora code names are generated, check out the 100% "libre" gNewSense distribution, and install a bunch of scientific applications on your Ubuntu box with just one command. In our web log feature, we revisit Mandriva Linux 2007 and give away four boxes of its PowerPack edition. Finally, reader's input is sought for a dilemma about the increasingly aggressive linking of several Linux distributions to DistroWatch. Happy reading!

Not exactly great - but I managed to get a few photos of the conference. It was a great time, and special thanks goes out to Steve Dickinson for all of his help and to Tom Rhodes over at the FreeBSD Project. Steve and Tom both manned the booth during those important times when I really needed a break (lunch :) and they both answered a volley of BSD and Linux related questions. Also - a special thank you to Beth for making sure I actually showed up

Dave will be at ApacheCon this week

LXer is sending me to ApacheCon in Austin, TX this week. I'd love to meet any LXer readers who might also be there.

DistroWatch Weekly: Mandriva returns to its roots, VectorLinux 5.8, openSUSE vs SLED

Welcome to this year's 41st issue of DistroWatch Weekly! With the release of Mandriva Linux 2007 last week it would seem that the once highly popular desktop Linux distribution has finally closed a shaky chapter behind itself and decided to return to what it does best - proudly produce a great desktop Linux system for the world. This issue of DistroWatch Weekly focuses on Mandriva Linux, its recent past and new products. But Mandriva 2007 wasn't the only major distribution release last week; the fans of Slackware Linux also had a reason to celebrate as version 11.0 of the world's oldest surviving Linux distribution finally hit the download mirrors, promptly followed by a number of Slackware derivatives for all kinds of purposes and processor architectures. Also in this issue: we'll take a quick look at the new VectorLinux 5.8, summarise the week in the troubled world of Debian GNU/Linux, and point our readers to a good comparison between openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Happy reading!
