Linux for Anarchists

There is a disturbing lack of resistance to Microsoft's market hegemony among anarchists and activists today. It is counter-revolutionary to design revolutionary fliers on a computer running Windows XP, displaying protest pictures on a computer running Windows XP is not a statement of protest, and using Microsoft software to coordinate anti-capitalist action is not anti-capitalist. To many, however, it seems that there is no other choice.

World of Goo has finally been ported to Linux. We have now a chance to show that this was a worthwhile endeavour and hopefully show to other Publishers that there is an incentive to do the same.

Is Mozilla wrong to side with EU in the anti-trust case against Microsoft?

A recent article from the popular weblog Techdirt condems Mozilla for siding with EU, because the success of Firefox proves that there is no monopoly. But is this really the case or did Firefox succeed despite the anti-competitive business practices of Microsoft? Does MS deserve to go unpunished even though they played unfair?

Intense Debate is one of the newer comment systems that aim to replace the built-in comments of the various blogging platforms. With their recent acquisition by Automattic (the makers of Wordpress) I believe the time has come to make them come to the "light side".

Do you remember a bit over a year ago when the MMORPG Ryzom was being liquidated and the FOSS community tried to buy the assets and release it under the GPL? Do you remember that in the end it was granted to another company under the impressions that they could keep the game going and provide better care for the employees? Well, not only has the company that took over (a subsidiary) bankrupted, but they have also left their employees unpaid for several months and the liquidator unpaid. Anyone else think that the FOSS community could do worse?

After noticing the Google Trends from a lifehacker post, I decided to check out how well Linux is faring against windows. Initially I compared Linux and Windows which gave a huge difference for windows. This is understandable since Linux is not the main environment but rather the core. I then decided to check the actual desktop that someone might use, and the result were interesting

We've seen a lot of top lists of extensions for the popular browser but all of them are focused on the home desktop and most of them mention the same extensions just because they're so good. Well, I've decided to create a short review of the 10 extensions I've found more useful for use within a MS oriented enterprise. If you are locked within the same environment, hopefully you'll discover something you've overlooked.

Most people that take an active interest in the Free Software movement recognize what the future holds for the PC Desktop. Linux will eventually become the OS of choice for home users.
The question is, what will Microsoft do to prevent, or at least delay it.

The answer? Free Windows.

Imagine a world where movies, music, art, games and anything else that we cerebrally consume is free to see and distribute. Where the visions of artists are not controlled by the one who pays their bills and where no-one dictates what the trends should be. What follows are my thoughts on the way the content creation of the future should be.

Do you work in an IT position and wish to promote Free/Open Source Software in a strict Microsoft Enterprise? Are you a user and wish to make your IT department see the light? I had a goal of one day migrating the company to Linux and while I may not be there yet, I made considerable progress by using small, easily used Open Sourced applications. In the end, I had built enough trust to take the next step If you wish to do the same, this article may help you.
