A Patent Lie

  • New York Times; By Timothy B. Lee (Posted by devnet on Jun 9, 2007 4:20 PM EDT)

WHAT a difference 16 years makes. Last month, the technology world was abuzz over an interview in Fortune magazine in which Bradford Smith, Microsoft’s general counsel, accused users and developers of various free software products of patent infringement and demanded royalties. Indeed, in recent years, Mr. Smith has argued that patents are essential to technological breakthroughs in software

The New Distro

How much does it cost to buy you? Do you have a price? Can you be paid off?

I'm sure many of the CEO's and CTO's of various Linux companies are now asking themselves this very question this week (or should be asking themselves) as Microsoft announced yet another "patent deal"...this time, with LG Electronics.

With this, the Xandros deal, the Novell Deal, and anything else Microsoft has up its sleeve (I look for several other distros to "indemnify" themselves in the next few months...for example, Linspire and Mandriva are two prime targets for MS...the bullseye is probably painted) I think that Microsoft has created it's own "Linux Distribution" so to speak. Let me share with you why I think they have...

Indy 500 and Linux Not Newsworthy?

There's a HUGE piece of news out there for Linux as an operating system...and I have only seen it published on Lxer.com, Linuxtoday.com and Digg.com. LINUX IS GOING TO THE INDIANAPOLIS 500!! This is HUGE for ALL Linux distributions...not just one. This is something that can show all those people out there what the Linux community is all about...collaboration, community, camaraderie, and drive....drive that can't be found in commercial ventures. But where, oh where, is the community reporting this news? The interesting thing is, they aren't...and It's very odd as to why they aren't there reporting this and rallying around it.

Dealing with Runaway Processes

Have you ever been using your Linux distro and suddenly found a program won’t close? It’s frustrating when an application hangs. In Windows, one could right click on the taskbar and choose “Task Manager” and kill the hanging process (which doesn’t always work BTW). In Linux, you can also kill these hanging processes.

Blogbridge, Simply the Best RSS

  • Yet Another Linux Blog; By devnet (Posted by devnet on Feb 27, 2007 1:50 AM EDT)

I’ve been asked by various people how I keep up to date with technology news, research, and the latest reports...mainly because I’m never at a loss for words when discussing something (big mouth much?). Of course, many people haven’t heard of RSS at all and don’t know that one can have a program to read multiple sites in a short amount of time. So, I searched for something that was better than those I had used: Pluck, Sage, Owl, Sharpreader, Wiz. I found it. And to my delight, it’s a cross-platform, GPL Licensed, Feed-synchronizing one that delivers unparalleled functionality and options. There’s nothing like it on the planet. If your interest is peaked, you’re in for a real treat.

Why Having 500+ Distros is a Good Thing

I just browsed back across some old bookmarks I had made on subjects to blog about. I've been playing catch up for the last few days as some of my projects I've been working on are slowing down. During this browsing session, I happened upon a blog entry titled "So Many Distros, So Little Time" which originally jumped across the RSS reader during January of this year. I gave it an honest read and was disgusted with the article quite a bit. Let me go point for point on this:

Going Fishing for a WinSCP Replacement?

So you've got insert_linux_distro_name_here installed and you're ready to get started with your standard computing day. You've only recently converted to this Linux thing. You know enough about Linux to install it and have it up and running for your main desktop. You've slowly begun easing yourself into this new Linux role by replacing the applications you used in Windows with free and open source ones installed or installable on Linux.

Who do You Trust with Your Computing?

Some of you may have read my friend and collegue's blog named "Blog of Helios" and visited his website lobby4linux.com enough to have understood what he has tried and is trying to accomplish with regards to Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management. Many of you probably respect this approach and support it as I do. Others may not have any idea what I'm speaking of. Allow me to background a bit:

Novell is Now the New SCO

So how is Novell the new SCO? First and foremost, I'm not the first one to talk about the correlation between this deal and SCO's indemnification licenses...Groklaw has detailed postings on it. Let's look at this concept a bit more. This deal between Microsoft and Novell isn't about getting Linux to play nice with Windows...it's about patents, intellectual property, and indemnification licenses.
