The idea of sandboxing applications has a certain appeal. By restricting a program's access to various features and parts of the system that it shouldn't need, any harm that can come from a compromise can be reduced—often, substantially so. But putting together the required pieces for a given application is a tedious task, which is part of why projects like Firejail have been started.

There are some specific use cases in which containerisation is the correct approach, but unless you can explain precisely why in your use case, then you should probably be using a hypervisor instead. Even if you're using virtualisation you should still be taking advantage of namespaces, and tools such as firejail can help when your application lacks native support for these features.

Three days ago freecode.com abruptly shut down, claiming “low traffic”, but there has been enough public mourning since to make me pretty sure it fills a need that’s still there. There was nowhere else you could go that was quite so good for getting a cross-sectional view of what the open-source world is doing, independently of any given forge site or distro.

Debian/Ubuntu extend the dominance in the Linux web server market at the expense of Red Hat/CentOS

At the beginning of 2010, Red Hat combined with its derivatives CentOS and Fedora had 53.2% of the web server Linux distributions, while Debian and Ubuntu combined only had 37.1%. Now that percentages have changed to 37.3% vs. 58.5% and Debian/Ubuntu have a double lead.
