H & R Block Works with Linux

Ah yes it is that time of year again for U.S. citizens. So when we started looking for an online tax tool that worked with Linux we were disappointed and surprised.

Well it seems that SCO has more lives than Jason. cha cha cha cha hah hah hah hah... Un freaken believable! So to be a balanced LXer news spotter sort of bloke, It is my solemn duty to follow up to my post sometime ago about SCO's inspiration. Yet again torn from the unofficial Holy Grail script... clop clop, clop clop, clop clop, clop clop....

Mythbusters- Vista is BUSTED

...Why not start with a computer loaded with basic stuff that works 100 percent of the time? Then, give us the option of adding the bells and whistles. There's another solution available to consumers: Switch to a Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu. Since most Linux OSs are free, there's no business reason to bloat up the system with feature frills...

Win a Custom, Open-Source Mini Monster PC: Extreme Freebie

...Unlike previous years, where we focused on pure computing horsepower, this year we wanted to develop a machine that is small and quiet and runs on an open-source operating system...

What Not to Buy Yourself for Christmas

From the article...
Operating Systems:
Don't buy: Linux.
The world's cheapest operating system is the darling of every do-it-yourselfer and the potential bane of every cheapskate user. You'll save money and, I bet, lose your mind if you switch to Linux. Note to DIYers: This advice is intended for middle-of-the-road tech consumers. You, with the screwdriver in your hand, please feel free to download as many copies of Ubuntu as you want.

SCO's inspiration for lawsuit exposed!

I followed the story from the very first announcement of the SCO lawsuits against GNU/Linux users(who also happen to be their customers). After reading the latest sound bite from this companies CEO that ruined itself with a flawed (understatement) business model. I realized that this story parallels another one so perfectly it is almost frightening. It can truly be said that if you ever doubted that history repeats itself doubt no more...

Freedomware?

Freedomware is not intended as a term to replace Free Software or Open Source Software aka FOSS, FLOSS. These terms have their niche and place in society. They are well established and we are all better for it. The Free Software movement was not created to have mass market appeal it was created to address a serious issue. The right for mankind to use technology and to improve upon it given that the progress is shared freely. Free of charge yes as the very nature of its progress depends on it. But more important is that it is free as in freedom. Open Source Software on the other hand does have a mass market appeal and was created as a means to maximize the inclusion of various interests professional and otherwise.

Linux Day!

WE ARE LINUX! September 17th 1991 Linus Torvalds uploaded the Linux kernel 0.0.1 to the internet. He made the source code freely available to anyone interested in improving on it. Linux is turning 16 years old this year and boy has it grown up! This site http://linuxday.getnix.com was created as a place where you can personally thank Linus and all of the Linux Kernel developers. You can also take the time to share with the world how and why you started using your Linux based OS. On the 17th of September every year we will be challenging you to take Linux with you into your everyday life. Wear a shirt, slap a sticker on something, wear a hat or button. Hand out Live CD's with your favorite flavor of Linux on top! Let's take the time to show the people around us why GNU/Linux is Priceless!

Freedomware free as in $$

This is a kind of part two so to speak of an earlier blog entitled Freedomware. In my previous blog I talked about some of the reasons why FOSS development seems to just work so well. This time around I want to talk about an interesting thought I had in regards to answering the common question of... "why is it free?" I used to reply it is free as in freedom... to which they respond with a pause a blank stare before they either say "really" or change the subject. I have not even touched on the reaction I get when I tell them that I do not need to worry about viruses and spy ware. Why is freedomware free as in $$?

After having a meeting with a medium sized business owner about his need for a website it became painfully clear to me that "we" as the FOSS "community" need to do a much better job at making what it is we are offering more visible. We need something that communicates what FOSS is and what benefits there are for using FOSS applications. To communicate in simple terms that by using FOSS you are in fact staking a claim to reliability, usability and security. It is time to get your work done the way you choose to do it. One size fits all is cr@p! But that is what many businesses owners are sold and that is what they buy and then try to sell themselves. There is nothing else! Right? Well we know differently. Now how do we communicate what FOSS is in simple terms. The answers may be easier than you think.
