The polls are closed and the results are in for the 2005 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards. Among the winners are Ubuntu, Firefox, MySQL and OpenOffice.org. The Members Choice Awards allow members of the Linux community to choose their favorite products in a variety of categories including Linux Distribution of the Year, Office Suite of the Year and Web Browser of the Year.

Voting Has Opened for the 2005 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards

LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce that voting for the 2005 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards is now open. The Members Choice Awards allow the Linux community to select their favorite products in a variety of categories. Awards will be given out in 20 categories, including Distribution of the Year, Browser of the Year, Office Suite of the Year, Desktop Environment of the Year and Database of the Year. The polls will close on March 16th and winners will have the option of receiving their award at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in Boston. Last years winners include Firefox, OpenOffice.org and MySQL.

LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce that it recently reached two milestones. The site now contains over two million (2,000,000) posts and has over two hundred thousand (200,000) registered members. LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce the launch of its redesigned website. Along with the new look comes a variety of new features and sections. LQ currently has over 60 forums, with topics ranging from Linux Newbies to Linux in the Enterprise, and has participation from twenty-five Linux distributions. LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce that LQ ISO has now facilitated over 1,000,000 Linux downloads. Founded in August of 2004, LQ ISO allows users to find and rate fast local download mirrors. The site currently allows you to download almost 120 different Linux distributions from over 430 different mirrors. The site now utilizes GEO IP data to help you find the fastest local download mirror.

Red Hat bangs the security drum

Red Hat has unveiled an initiative dubbed 'Security in a Networked World' at the LinuxWorld tradeshow in San Francisco. As part of the programme, the Linux vendor showcased its Red Hat Certificate System that allows organisations to manage security certificates used to sign emails, or authenticate users for online banking applications. It also supports authentication through the use of smartcards. Red Hat has been working with the Apache Foundation to add support for the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client through the use of Apache's open source Network Security Service Libraries. The collaboration will allow users of both systems to send and receive authenticated emails with Thunderbird, while organisations including online banks and web stores can use the system to authenticate users through smartcards in combination with Firefox.

Novell strikes a deal with Ministry of Education

Novell seems likely to increase its presence and that of open-source software in the school market after concluding a nationwide agreement with the Ministry of Education last week. The 18-month agreement gives schools access to Novell Open Enterprise Server, Suse Linux server and desktop operating systems and other Novell applications such as ZENworks, Groupwise and Border Manager.

Firefox Advocate Site Hit by Hackers

Mozilla's SpeadFirefox.com community marketing site became an unwitting spam platform after it was hit by "unknown remote attackers," the site's managers said. According to an e-mail sent from the SpreadFirefox.com site to users today, the attack was discovered only on Tuesday. The exploit did not affect any other Mozilla sites or software and was limited only to the SpreadFirefox.com site according to the email.

Mozilla Foundation releases Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.5 Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, cross-platform email and news client developed by the Mozilla Foundation. The project strategy is modeled after Mozilla Firefox, a project aimed at creating a smaller and faster web browser. Just as Firefox aims to redefine the web browser, Thunderbird is a refinement of the mail and news interface. Users often use them both together.
