Giving OpenSuse 12.1 a shot

In our course through life, we all end up finding things that we enjoy and that we like to keep around. Linux and photography are two things have added to my enjoyment for a long time. [...] So, when I read about some of the features in OpenSuse 12.1, I couldn’t resist giving it a try.

A friend of mine brought me his computer for fixing, a Compaq Presario with XP Home. It was in a reboot loop. I told him about Linux, and all its advantages, and he agreed to try it. I grabbed my PCLinuxOS CD and installed it in a matter minutes. Everything was working, but ...

Linux Today: Picking Ourselves Up, Dusting Ourselves Off

Our friends at LXer provided Carla with a place to say what she needed to say about her situation. Personally, all I can say is that I consider her a good friend, and that I'm sorry she wasn't given a chance to say goodbye here, among the community she's been part of for years.

Python for Newbies

A few months ago I posted a link to a site on which I had posted this tutorial. The site was related to Maemo and has since made some big changes, including the removal of all the old content. So, I decided to host the tutorial on my own site. I hope this becomes a more permanent location for it. So, if you or any one you know wants to learn Python, I think this is a good place to start

Amarok and digiKam on Windows

While I do believe that most people would be better off running Linux, I fully understand that for some people this is just not feasible, for one reason or another. Even I have to run Windows occasionally at work. Fortunately, some of my favorite Linux programs are gradually becoming available in Windows. This makes using Windows at least a bit more bearable for me.

Keeping your computers in sync

If you are like me, you have several computers or devices that you use to access your data at different times during the day... Of course, the problem is that once you modify the data residing on any one of the machines, the other machines now need to get updated. But that is easier said than done.

Out of the darkness comes Enlightenment

Enlightenment is one environment that I had wanted to try for a while. I remember seeing some beautiful Enlightenment screen shots about 10 years ago. However, at the time, installing it was not an easy task.
I have only started playing with it, so don’t expect a deep review. I only want to highlight the beauty of the environment and the good job the PCLinuxOS team did in customizing it for their distro.

OpenOffice.org and the Gimp on the N900

My initial reaction was, "yeah right". You see, over the years, I have seem many geek attempts to stretch the capabilities of a platform with "proof of concept" type products.

Looking for Newbies that want to learn Python

This is a Python tutorial that tries to touch on most areas of the Python language, but attempts to be very simple so that people who have never done any sort of programming can grasp it.

And Now for Something Completely Different – The N900 and its Killer Feature

I won't go into every detail and feature because those have been covered ad nauseum already, including the fact that it has by far the best web browser(s) and the best multi-tasking experience of any comparable device out there right now. I will only focus on some of the features that are unique to the N900 and make it a real standout, and which, if any, could be considered the N900's “ killer feature”.

Nokia’s Maemo OS – The next big wave

Trends in computers come in waves. Developers are like surfers on the shore spying out the horizon looking out for the next big one. Today I write about a wave that is just now starting to take shape, looks almost innocuous, but that has the potential to be a great ride as well – Nokia’s Maemo operating system.

The Nokia N900 – Not just an iToy, but a lot more fun

Comparisons are useful only to determine which device, if any, is good for you in particular. So, let me run you trough some of the facts that distinguish these devices to see why I think the N900 should be the right device for a lot of people.

Open Source Photo Processing Comes of Age

People who enjoy digital photography as a creative outlet are very familiar with software products from companies like Adobe, Corel, etc. Most of them are also likely familiar with what until recently was the premier open source photo editor, the Gimp. [...] Happily, there is now another open source alternative with 16 bit mode editing capabilities which appears to be getting ready to give the big guys a run for their money – digiKam.

My KDE 4.x Desktop Activities Tutorial

Desktop Activities is a desktop usability concept that allows you to have multiple style and other settings for your desktop or desktops. There you have it, my attempt at a one sentence definition. Of course, that only pleases people who write dictionaries and encyclopedias. As for us, regular users, what we like to see are tutorials that actually show us what we are talking about. So, I will try to do that now for you as well. For this tutorial, I will be using KDE 4.2.4 as found in Fedora 11.

  • Story Type: Editorial
For the last few months my Thinkpad has been, and still is, the host of several wonderful Linux distributions, all of them based on the new KDE 4 desktop environment. So, today, in mid summer 2009, is there still a reason to run a KDE 3 desktop? Well, if it wasn’t for PCLinuxOS I would have to say no.

What is all this FOSS about Mono?

I wrote a blog entry recently in which I expressed my displeasure with the situation around the use of Mono for FOSS development. Since then an interesting and unexpected development has occurred.

Discouraging FOSS

  • Story Type: Editorial
It is clear that the more people are interested and able to improve and maintain the FOSS pool, the more Microsoft will find it hard to continue having success in the market. In other words, the only hope for Microsoft to contain Linux is to remove the desire for people to continue contributing to it. If you were Microsoft how would you go about doing that?

Why Windows needs multiple desktops capability

  • Story Type: Tutorial
Users of the Linux operating system have been enjoying multiple desktop capabilities for many years already, and they are about to experience the next step of the multiple desktop paradigm evolution. So why are multiple desktops useful and how much do they really help?

Why I prefer KDE over GNOME

I see many people using GNOME these days. Many of them are new Linux users and are happy to be free from the Microsoft clutches. However, I feel a bit guilty for not being able to rejoice about it. Sure, they are not running Windows, but they have fallen in the clutches of the lack of options Nazis.

Warning to Internet Explorer users

There is currently a very bad security problem in Internet Explorer that is actively being exploited by the bad guys and that threatens to make the Internet even more infested with compromised machines that the bad guys can then use for their nefarious purposes. With that in mind, I thought that this may be a good opportunity to help our friends and family members that are Internet Explorer users try out some of the alternatives.
