Creating PDF from code with FOP

I recently had a project that needed to do a whole lot of number crunching, and then create a PDF to present those numbers and a line chart as well. This presented two problems for me - how to create a PDF from code, and how to create a chart for use within that PDF. I can say that I have had some success and wish to share with you the process. I'll talk about the PDF side of things in this article, and post another soon with details on how I handled the chart. But an overview of the chart solution is included below.

Import CSV files into Drupal CCK nodes

One of the projects I'm working on is to migrate a website from an old/outdated content management system I wrote 5+ years ago to something more modern - Drupal One of the challenges here is the listing type pages that provide rows of links to related websites. These links contain the link title, the URL (of course), and a brief description. The alternatives for moving this data was to either copy the rendered table into a single page node, or make use of the Content Construction Kit (CCK) to create custom nodes reflecting the data. Using CCK allows each list entry to be edited directly and actually follows the intended user's way of thinking much better - they DO NOT know HTML at all.

Lessons in Large RAM

I noticed some performance problems when I was running two virtual machines simultaneously (a la VMWare Server. When I began looking into this I discovered VMWare was only allowing 1.8 GB of RAM usage for my virtual machines. This struck me as odd because my desktop box was supposed to have 4 GB of RAM. Or so I thought. After some checking I discovered I had been confused with another box, and my desktop did in fact only have 2 GB of RAM. Well now, I had to fix that.
