According to the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, Oracle and Sun expect that the European Commission will approve the acquisition of Sun Microsystems some time this week. The report which cites sources close to both companies, comes as the 27th of January deadline for the Commission's decision approaches and suggests that the official announcement of the successful acquisition will be issued in early February.

It is reported that to ensure a smooth transition and integration, most of the decisions about the new organisational structure and products have already been made. Emails have also already been prepared for Sun employees to inform them whether they will keep or lose their jobs. While the number of positions to be eliminated is still unclear the report says sources believe it to be a "significant reduction".

The European Commission started its investigations into the acquisition of Sun by Oracle, initially announced in April 2009, because of concerns that the company could make substantial cuts in the development of the MySQL database. The primary copyright to the open source database has been owned by Sun since early 2008. Oracle has publicly assured users that it would maintain MySQL as open source. MySQL founder Monty Widenius has said that he was expecting the European Commission to eventually approve the deal and has taken his campaign to save MySQL from Oracle to the competition authorities in Russia and China.
