Google Wave Logo Community interest in continuing the development of Google's Wave communication platform has led to a proposal to migrate portions of the code base to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). The proposal was posted to the Apache Incubator wiki by Google and Novell employees, as well as several independent developers. The Apache Incubator is the place where potential future Apache projects can be submitted to the open source organisation for consideration.

In early August, low adoption rates and a poor reception from prospective end users had caused Google to abandon its Wave project, which had been started in 2009. Shortly after the decision was made, however, the project leaders announced plans to release the Wave client and server as open source software called "Wave in a Box" (WIAB) under the Apache licence. Wave in a Box is now the basis of the project proposal posted to the Incubator wiki. While it doesn't include the full range of Wave features, it reportedly does allow users to set up their own Wave servers and to continue to develop the project. The developers also plan to create APIs and a Web 2.0 client. Furthermore, Wave in a Box includes an implementation of the Wave Federation Protocol.

The proposal submitted to the Incubator states that the project's initial goals are to migrate the code base from Google to the Apache infrastructure, to quickly reach a state where it is possible to continue the development of Wave In a Box, and to find new committers for the project. The developers also anticipate that future committers will join the project from such vendors as Novell and SAP, as well as from companies related to the US Navy.
