The Document Foundation has announced the availability of the first release candidate (RC1) for version 3.3 of LibreOffice, the free open source office suite. LibreOffice forked from the OpenOffice.org office suite following Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems the original copyright holders of the name and main sponsors of the project.

As with all development builds LibreOffice 3.3 RC1 is not intended for mission critical or production use. There are a number of known issues that are still being worked on relating to internationalisation, help systems, branding and legacy StarOffice binary formats. More information on the changes in the release can be found in the LibreOffice repository.

The Document Foundation was formed when it became clear that Oracle's plans for project management and leadership of OpenOfice development did not meet with the approval of the independent developers working on OpenOffice. Further information on the founding of the Document Foundation and on the reasons for the fork can be found on the foundation's FAQ page.

LibreOffice 3.3 RC1 is available to download as binaries for Mirosoft Windows, GNU/Linux 32 and 64-bit and for Mac OS X or as source code from the Document Foundation web site. Alternatively, downloads are available through BitTorrent and unofficial Debian packages are provided.
