Sabayon Logo The Sabayon Linux developers have announced the availability of the GNOME and KDE variants of version 5.5 of their Linux distribution. Sabayon, named after an egg-yolk based dessert (also known as zabaglione) is derived from Gentoo Linux and is intended to provide a "complete out-of-the-box experience" while being both stable and versatile.

Sabayon Linux 5.5 features the latest 2.6.37 Linux kernel and includes a choice of either GNOME 2.32 or KDE 4.5.5 as the desktop environment – the developers note that the just released KDE 4.6.0 will be available through updates. Ext4 is used as the default file system and experimental support is included for Btrfs. Changes over the previous 5.4 release include more than 1,000 newly updated packages, even faster boot time and fixes for over 100 bugs, improving the distributions overall stability, usability and performance.

More details about the release, including GNOME and KDE tours and a list of updated packages, are available in the announcement forum post. Sabayon Linux 5.5 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit systems from one of the project's mirrors and, according to Sabayon Linux founder Fabio Erculiani, can be installed in approximately 10 minutes.
