Thunderbird Conversations Addon Enables Gmail Style Threaded Conversation View

Thunderbird Conversations 2.0 is an add-on for Thunderbird 3.3 that enables Gmail style threaded conversations view. The add-on is currently in alpha stage but it is quite stable so far.

Thunderbird Conversations add-on is developed by Jonathan Protzenko from Mozilla Labs Team. A look at its features:
  • A regular conversation view that fetches messages from all folders, and behaves just like Gmail
  • Integration with Thunderbird Contacts: participants have tooltips in the conversation, and you can view their avatars and profiles from Facebook, Twitter etc
  • A quick reply feature, with autocomplete, that allows you to reply to a thread in a snap
  • Quoted parts are collapsed
  • keyboard shortcuts

Requirements

Thunderbird Conversations will only work with latest Thunderbird 3.3 Miramar which itself is in Alpha stage. Since both add-on and client is in alpha stage, use them cautiously. To download latest version of Thunderbird 3 Miramar, run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install thunderbird-3.3

Installation and Setup

Once you install Thunderbird 3.3, get the add-on from here. Now go to the Addons tab and click on Install Add-on From File

Restart Thunderbird and you will be prompted with initial setup window.

Adjust settings as per your need and apply changes. That's it. You will now see all your messages in Gmail style threaded view. A comparison between Gmail and Thunderbird:

P.S. I am really impressed with how fast and intuitive the new Thunderbird feels. Kudos to the Mozilla team. Maybe some day it will become default e-mail client for Ubuntu.
