Debian developers are still deciding on the name for the successor to "Wheezy + 1", but should be announcing a name within the next month.
Debian Wheezy, a.k.a. Debian 7.0, won't be released until early next year after
having just been frozen. However, at the
DebConf 2012 event in Managua, Nicaragua, questions were raised today about the name for Wheezy's successor.
Debian codenames are derived from names of toys in the "Toy Story" movie, e.g. Woody, Sarge, Lenny, Squeeze, Wheezy, Potato, Buzz, etc. Debian developers have been discussing the potential names for "Wheezy + 1" / what should become Debian 8.0, but they aren't ready to publicly announce anything.
The name, however, should be decided and publicly announced in approximately one month's time. The two names that were publicly mentioned as possibilities were
Zurg and
Shark. According to
Wikipedia, Evil Emperor Zug is a space villain action figure that is Buzz Lightyear's archenemy. Mr. Shark meanwhile is a "blue rubber squeeze toy shark" for Wheezy in Toy Story 2.
Side note: Now having been in Nicaragua for about 24 hours, it's time for the obligatory Phoronix beer review for DebConf 12. At lunch today the best Nicaraguan beer I was told (at least at the restaurant where dining with an Eucalyptus developer) was
Cerveza Toña. Cerveza Toña is a lager beer that comes in at 4.6% ABV. It's far from being the best lager I've encountered of the hundreds of different kinds tasted around the world, but it was better than anticipated seeing as Nicaragua isn't known for their beer. It was at least drinkable and perhaps slightly better than some of the American lagers.
