Slackware logo Seventeen months after Slackware 13.37, Patrick Volkerding and the Slackware developers have officially released version 14 of the Linux distribution. Slackware is the oldest still-maintained Linux distribution and compared with its predecessor, the new version offers far more recent components, with a current Linux 3.2-based long-term kernel (3.2.29), GCC 4.7.1, Glibc 2.15, X.org's X-Server 1.12.1, Perl 5.16.1, and the Xfce 4.10 and KDE 4.8.5 desktop interfaces.

Other updated packages include Firefox and Thunderbird, whose current version is now 15.0.1. The Java Development Kit (JDK) 6, on the other hand, had to be removed due to Oracle ending its "Operating System Distributor license for Java" programme. The distribution therefore no longer includes a Java environment, but a port of OpenJDK is separately available. All changes are listed in the changelog. The developers also fixed numerous bugs after the last release candidate.

The Slackware distribution includes six CDs (32-bit only) or a double-sided DVD that offers 32-bit and a 64-bit versions. The images can be downloaded free of charge from the Slackware mirrors. Slackware Linux is also available for pre-order as an official release from Patrick Volkerding from the Slackware Store; proceeds from sales go to support the development of Slackware.

Also released at the same time is Slackware ARM 14.0, an ARM version of Slackware that now supports the Trimslice Pro and Raspberry Pi. Further details of the Raspberry Pi port are available as part of a "community support programme" which handles Pi support within the Slackware project.

Update - Although the binary packages for Oracle's Java are not provided, a "SlackBuild" script is available which will repackage Oracle's tarballs into Slackware packages once the user has downloaded the binary files from Oracle's website.
