OpenNebula

OpenNebula, the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud project, sees the majority of its deployment in industry, according to C12G's latest Cloud Architecture Survey. The survey, conducted by the commercial company behind OpenNebula over the second and third quarters of 2012, polled 2,500 users of OpenNebula and only analyses the responses from the 820 who reported having OpenNebula up and running.

Although OpenNebula appeared in 2005 as a research project and research dominated its early use, according to the survey 43% of its deployments are now in industry, with only 17% in research. OpenNebula's use for private clouds is emphasised in the finding that 79% of respondents have build their own private platform, leaving only one fifth of deployments being used to offer public services. Workloads were also examined: 42% of users say their system is being used for running production workloads, while the remainder use their cloud systems in non-critical ways.

The survey also looked at how those clouds were constructed. KVM (42%) and VMware (27%) were the dominant hypervisors and Ubuntu (31%) and CentOS (26%) were the dominant Linux distributions. There was no clear leader in storage backends though, with users split between distributed filesystems (38%), local host storage (34%) and block-based systems (23%). 51% of the deployments were of medium size (between 10 and 100 physical servers), while 13% had more than 500 physical nodes.

The next version of OpenNebula, 3.8, has just gone into beta, with enhanced integration for VMware and KVM; specifically, native support for VMFS for VMware-based systems, and cgroups and SPICE integration for KVM deployments. There is also support for seamless integration of the Virtual Router, available from the new OpenNebula AppMarket, an improved EC2 Query API and a more robust virtual machine life-cycle.

The survey shows OpenNebula has a healthy community for its cloud solution, which became an open source project in 2008 and has been well tested in production at customers such as Telefonica, RIM and the European Space Agency. The survey was carried out by C12G Labs, the company founded by OpenNebula authors in 2010, which offers production ready versions and support subscriptions for the software.
