Trinity logo Trinity, the fork of the classic version of the KDE desktop which appeared in wake of the backlash against KDE 4.0, is still being developed and, after a year of work, a new stable release, version 3.5.13.1, of the desktop environment is now available. Trinity is a fork that continues development of the old 3.x branch of the KDE desktop and which has been enhanced with additional features but is also designed to be both compatible with newer hardware and responsive on older systems.

According to project founder and lead developer Timothy Pearson, the new stable release update (SRU) comprises more than 140 bug fixes and nearly 1,200 patches which improve overall stability while also enhancing existing features. Among the changes are updates to the desktop's menu and screen locking, improvements to IMAP performance and the KMix sound mixer, and the addition of controls to set default mount options in the KDE Control Center, also known as KControl.

Updated programs include the KTorrent BitTorrent client and the KMyMoney personal finance manager application, which has been upgraded to the current stable version (1.0.5) for the KDE 3 Platform. In the bundled KMPlayer multimedia player, screen saver control has been improved and new keyboard shortcuts have been also added.

A full list of changes and improvements can be found in the change log and on the 3.5.13.1 wiki page. The new release of the Trinity desktop environment can be downloaded from the project's site, and installation instructions for Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, Fedora and Slackware are provided.
