The Linux 3.8 kernel will be released in March 2013

The newest operating system from Canonical, Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), is shipping with Linux kernel 3.5, but the upcoming Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) could arrive with Linux kernel 3.8.

According to Michael Larabel from phoronix.com, the upcoming Ubuntu 13.04, due for release on April 25th, 2013, will probably feature the Linux 3.8 kernel, which is not even in development stage yet.

The Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) event for Ubuntu 13.04 ended today, with a big party, where (most probably) all attendees enjoyed a fresh drink and delicious appetizers.

But the news is still coming from UDS-R, as today we’re happy to report that Ubuntu 13.04 will be powered by Linux kernel 3.8.

The current stable release of the Linux kernel is now 3.6, but the development version is now 3.7, which will reach final stage sometime at the beginning of 2013 or, if we’re lucky, in December 2012, just in time for the holidays.

Apparently, the final version of Linux kernel 3.8 will be released in mid-March 2013, and the first RC (Release Candidate) version will be made available for testing in January 2013, right after the winter holidays.

In the same news, the Ubuntu developers also discussed whether Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) will support Linux x32 ABI or not, which may be enabled in the kernel.

Dubbed Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 13.04 will be the 18th release of the Ubuntu operating system, and it will see the light of day on April 25, 2013.

As we’ve announced yesterday, Ubuntu 13.04 will have only a Beta version available for testing, due for release on March 28th, 2013, which should probably incorporate the final release of Linux kernel 3.8.
